PTK chapter scores big at International Convention in Seattle

The RVCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa brought back six awards from the 93rd International Convention in Seattle last weekend. According to President Leilani Albin, that’s the chapter’s best performance in more than 20 years.

It was also the finest showing any chapter in the NJ, PA, DE and MD region has ever had, according to Dan Houghtaling, PTK regional coordinator.

The chapter competed for the honors with more than 1,000 chapters from around the world.

The six awards were for: 1) Distinguished Chapter (awarded to the top 25 chapters); 2) Distinguished Chapter Officer - Jonathan Lopes; 3) Distinguished Honors in Action project award; 4) Distinguished Issue Award - Honors in Action (one of top four entries related to the topic: The Individual and Community); 5) Paragon Award for New Advisors - Anne Marie Anderson, and 6) Distinguished Advisor Award - Steve Schwarz.

In addition, Maria Palar, former RVCC chapter president, won the Distinguished Regional Officer Award.

Phi Theta Kappa is an honor society dedicated to recognizing and encouraging scholarship among students in two-year-colleges.

The 2010-11 officer team of the RVCC chapter is Leilani Albin, president; Dave Jacobson, vice president; Senka Andric, secretary, Jonathan Lopes, vp leadership; Natalie Delia, vp membership; Charisse Sobers, vp scholarship, and Lorand Laskai, vp hallmarks.
