RVCC Gym Becomes Temporary Home For Flood Victims

More than 140 flood victims, at least half of them children, slept in cots in the RVCC gym last night as part of Red Cross efforts to help residents of Bound Brook and Manville whose homes were inundated by rising water from last week’s rainfall. That’s down from the nearly 300 people who arrived on Tuesday.

RVCC students, faculty and staff have pitched in to help.

Recruits in the Somerset County Police Academy set up cots in the gym for the victims, and officers from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office are augmenting campus security teams to help keep the area secure and the temporary residents safe 24 hours a day. Click here to read more

Movie Review-Shutter Island

Acclaimed director Martin Scorsese’s new film Shutter Island is better than I anticipated from the trailer, but short of great.

The story, based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, takes place in 1954 at a mental hospital on Shutter Island. Click here to read more.

Movie Review-Ghost Writer

An author with a unexceptional career is surprisingly hired to complete the manuscript of a retired British Prime Minister’s memoirs. What looks to be a surefire bonanza for the spirited, confident young scribe, $250,000 for four weeks work, soon becomes a more demanding — and more dangerous — task. Even before he sees the unfinished autobiography for the first time he’s mugged walking home from the publisher’s office.

Pond Aerator Beautifies RVCC "Front Door"

An aerator has been installed in the pond at the main entrance to campus. The cascading spray is intended to suppress the growth of algae, oxygenate the water and help create a healthy aquatic environment. It’s also pretty.

The move comes out of an agreement the college made last year with the federal Environmental Protection Agency to be an environmental steward, reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to a better environment.

The Record is the online newspaper of the RVCC community, designed, produced and written by students. With a focus on RVCC news, profiles, features and opinions, we publish regularly throughout the semester. Publishing online enables us to present material in a variety of formats, including print, photo gallery, audio and video.

To put out a quality newspaper requires many student volunteers: web designers and production people, reporters, writers, photographers, videographers, and even advertising reps.

If you would like to be part of The Record club, send us an e-mail. We meet Wednesday, 4:30-8:20 p.m. in cafeteria upstairs, but you don't have to be available during that time to be a part of the team.

Got a news tip, story or upcoming event you think the RVCC community ought to know about,
send us an e-mail.
